Winemaker Jean-Michel Bouzereau is well known for his Chardonnays, which in some cases, are such hot commodities, they’re allocated. He does apply his expertise to a few red wines and the results are seriously delicious.
The premier cru Les Vignes Franches vineyard is located southwest of the village, just north of Pommard. 2012 was a challenging vintage, as production fell by up to 50% in some places. On the other hand, the fruit harvested was of the finest quality, leading Clive Coates MW to cite that to some, the quality of 2012 rivals the fine vintages of 2005, 2009, and 2010.
Longtime Taste of Burgundy club subscribers may recognize this wine, as it was featured back in 2015! Back then, we recommended drinking it, “from 2019-2029 and beyond.” Now that it’s 2019, it’s strutting its stuff in a magnificent way! Lovely aromas of red, black, and purple berries, along with an herbal note and some of that Beaune-earthiness pop out on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and complex, as time has been good to this wine. When we see a wine we love back on the market for a fair price, we jump on it. Drink now - 2035.
