About 25 miles southeast of Siena is the picturesque hill town of Montepulciano. The appellation, Vino di Montepulciano, stipulates that grapes must grow on the surrounding hillsides. Sangiovese is the preeminent varietal and is known locally as Prugnolo Gentile. Cherry notes galore with good tannin structure, this wine begs for meat-sauce over pasta.
