This is quite possibly THE BEST VALUE red wine made in the US for under $15.
Kiona was the first winery to plant grapes on Red Mountain back in the '70's. They planted less than 2 acres of Lemberger, a grape native to the lower stretches of the Danube River, also known as Blaufränkisch in Austria and Kékfrankos in Hungary. The Lemberger vines came by way of British Columbia in the 1940's. The vines ended up in Washington State University's test vineyard and remained there in obscurity until Kiona's founders, John Williams and Jim Holmes planted them. Their first vintage of Lemberger was 1980.
Lemberger is well-suited to Red Mountain's hot summer temperatures and low rainfall. Lemberger ripens in this climate while still maintaining freshness and liveliness on the palate. The 2016 Lemberger is juicy, young and fresh. A deep purple color in the glass gives way to aromas of black cherries and brambly berries. The tannins are supple and the finish is generous with a dusty cocoa finish. It's delightful!
