Domaine Stephane Magnien’s holdings are just 4.5 hectares, but they are scattered among the Côte de Nuits’ finest appellations. Morey-Saint-Denis is sandwiched in between Gevrey-Chambertin in the north and Chambolle-Musigny to the south. The wines often possess the power of the former while retaining the finesse and softness of the latter.
2016 marks the very first vintage that youthful Stephane Magnien has made two seperate cuvées of Morey-Saint-Denis. For the inaugural Grains Fins, he sourced fruit from two small plots planted in gravelly soils which lend a particular elegance to the wine.
Beautifully scented brambly-cherry Pinot Noir fruit dominates the aromas, and the palate is lively and expressive. The 2016 Grains Fins is definitely more Chambolle-like than Gevrey, though it has the structure to last a decade or more in the cellar.
Drinkable now with decanting, otherwise this will be best from 2020-2032.
