The 2017 vintage for white Burgundy was another in a run of high quality vintages. After a cool April and average May, things heated up beginning in June. The remarkable thing was that the nights stayed cool. This of course contributes to the development of natural acidity in the fruit, lending the finished wine its essential bite.
Viré-Clessé was given its AOC status in the late 1990’s, due to its gravel and red clay soils upon limestone, not to mention its hillside plots with favorable sun exposure.
Representing the third generation of his family in charge, Jean-Marie Chaland makes the wine for Domaine Sainte-Barbe, which received its organic certification in 2006. Jean-Marie’s l’Epinet vineyard was planted in the 1940’s, giving the roots of the vines many years to bore deep into the limestone, producing wine with great character and complexity. Chaland matures his wines in neutral oak, allowing his vineyard sites to display their purity. Drink from 2020-2030.
